- Webflow pages can be cited by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Webflow handles the technical access - the content decides whether you get quoted.
- Make sure AI bots are allowed, your sitemap is live and key pages carry schema. Webflow also lets you upload an llms.txt file, though its effect is still unproven.
- Write pages that answer a buyer's question in the first sentence, with specific numbers and claims that still make sense when quoted alone.
- Proof and freshness matter: AI assistants cite pages that are about 26% younger on average than those in Google's organic results, according to an Ahrefs study of 17 million citations.
- Measure AI visibility with a fixed set of buyer questions. Tracking our own, Polonio went from 0% to 56% visibility in ChatGPT for our on-demand squad topic in under three months.
Can a Webflow site get cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini?
Yes. AI assistants pull from web pages when they answer questions, and Webflow pages are as readable to them as any other site. Webflow outputs clean HTML, generates a sitemap and gives you control over which bots can crawl you.
What Webflow cannot do is make a page worth quoting. AI assistants pick sources that answer the exact question clearly, back it up and look trustworthy. That part is content, structure and reputation, which is where most of this guide focuses.
This matters most for companies whose buyers research with AI before they ever fill out a form. For AI companies in particular, not showing up in the assistants your buyers use is a visible gap.
What is AEO, and how is it different from SEO?
AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the work of getting your brand mentioned and linked inside AI-generated answers. SEO aims for a ranking position. AEO aims to be one of the few sources an assistant quotes.
The searches look different too. People ask AI tools full questions with context, for example “which Webflow agency is best for a fintech company raising a round?” We see this in our own Search Console: some of our most-shown queries are long, specific questions like “best Webflow agency for scalable multi-language sites”, which alone was shown 318 times. Pages built around short keywords rarely answer questions that specific.
The good news: AEO and SEO share the same foundation. A page that answers a real question clearly, on a technically sound site, tends to do well in both.
Which Webflow settings help AI engines find your site?
Check five settings, most take minutes.
- AI bots allowed. In Site settings, then SEO, Webflow's traffic control can block groups of search and AI bots. Keep them allowed unless you have a reason to block them.
- Sitemap on. The auto-generated sitemap tells crawlers what exists and when each page last changed.
- Schema on key pages. Organization schema on the homepage, Article on blog posts and FAQ schema on pages with FAQ sections help assistants understand what each page is.
- An llms.txt file. Webflow lets you upload one in Site settings, under SEO. It gives AI tools a plain summary of your site and its key pages. Webflow itself calls the format experimental, so treat it as a small extra, not a strategy.
- Content in the page, not in images. Text inside images, PDF-only resources and content loaded by third-party widgets is harder for crawlers to read. Keep key answers in the HTML.
How should you write pages that AI engines quote?
Write so any single paragraph could be lifted into an answer and still be correct. When I review a page for AI search, the first test is simple: can the first sentence under each heading be quoted on its own?
- Answer first. Put the answer in the first sentence after every heading, then explain.
- Use headings that match real questions. “How long does a WordPress to Webflow migration take?” is easier to match to a prompt than “Timeline”.
- Be specific. “Most of our migrations take 3 to 4 months” gets quoted. “Timelines vary depending on many factors” does not.
- Say who you are consistently. Describe what you do, for whom and where in the same words across your homepage, service pages and profiles. Assistants build their picture of your brand from repetition.
- Add FAQs and tables. Short question-and-answer pairs and comparison tables are easy for assistants to extract.
Our tip: Start with the 10 questions your sales team hears most. Check which ones your site answers directly today. The gaps are your first AEO content plan, and they double as better sales collateral.
Why do proof and freshness matter for AI citations?
AI assistants try not to repeat claims they cannot trust, and they lean toward recent content. Both work in your favor if your site shows real results and gets updated.
On proof, specific always beats general. A case study that opens with “loan run rate from 380 to nearly 600 a month”, like our Kavak case study, gives an assistant a concrete fact to cite. This year we rewrote our own case studies so each one states its result at the top. Mentions outside your site help too: partner directories, reviews, podcasts and community discussions all tell assistants that others vouch for you. In regulated markets this carries extra weight, which is why trust signals are central to fintech website design.
On freshness, the data is clear. An Ahrefs study of about 17 million citations found that pages cited by AI assistants were about 26% younger on average than pages in Google's organic results. Updating key pages regularly, with real changes rather than a new date, keeps them in contention.
This is where a well-built CMS pays off. When the marketing team can update content without a developer, refreshing 20 pages a quarter is routine instead of a project.
How do you measure AI visibility?
Ask the same buyer questions in each assistant every month and record whether you are mentioned, linked and described correctly. That is how we track our own visibility: a fixed set of buyer questions, asked monthly in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, with an AI visibility tool like Profound tracking the results week by week.
From our site: For the topic “on-demand design and development squads”, tracked across 8 buyer prompts in ChatGPT in Argentina, Polonio's visibility score grew from 0% in late July to 56% by mid-October, peaking at 76%. Our share of voice rose from about 1% to 10%, and we moved from 18th to 1st in the weekly ranking. ChatGPT now typically names us first or second.
Three numbers are worth tracking:
Webflow also offers Webflow AEO for Enterprise customers, which tracks AI traffic, share of voice and sentiment across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Any team can run Webflow's free AEO assessment, which scores a site on content, technical setup, authority and measurement.
What is changing in Webflow for AI search?
Webflow is building more of this into the platform. Beyond Webflow AEO, its new platform Source is designed so agents can flag pages to improve for AI search and draft the changes for your team to approve.
Tools will make the work faster, but they will not change what gets cited. Clear answers, real proof and fresh content are what the assistants are looking for, whichever tool helps you produce them.
Where should a marketing team start with AEO?
Start with access, then your most valuable pages. In order:
- Confirm AI bots are allowed and your sitemap and schema are in place.
- List the 10 to 20 questions your buyers ask before they buy.
- Rewrite the pages that should answer them, answer first, with proof.
- Set up monthly tracking, so you know what changes.
Most teams can do the first two steps this week. If your site structure makes the rest hard, for example content locked in rigid page layouts or no CMS your team can update, a Transform project rebuilds it so search engines and AI assistants can read it and your team can keep it current.
